The Party

Updated: Mar 6, 2019

A black-and-white movie that feels more like a play and has a very British sense of humor. In other words, a movie that is guaranteed never to become a blockbuster. Still, if you think this is for you, you should make sure to watch The Party before it leaves the theaters. What I can tell you is that I really liked it. In fact, I like it even better now than I did when I left the theater, after thinking more about it.

Only 71-minutes long, the entire story takes place in Janet and Bill’s home, during a party to celebrate Janet’s recent promotion. A member of the UK opposition party, she has just been appointed for an important political position, but the small celebration with close friends quickly goes off the rail with a number of revelations.

A mix of drama and black comedy, the Sally Potter movie has great dialogues, and a stellar cast that includes Kristin Scott Thomas (Janet), Timothy Spall (Bill), Emily Mortimer and Patricia Clarkson, who plays the cynic April, my favorite character.
